Arduino IDE

The editor that verifies and uploads Arduino sketches to a board.

Why use it

It supplies the simple write → Verify → Upload path for all five Uno R3 labs; standalone g++ or CMake is not a beginner prerequisite.

  • Uno R3 sketch editing
  • board and port selection
  • compile and upload
  • Serial Monitor
Windows · macOS · Linuxrequiredactive

Getting started

Install and open Arduino IDE. Connect the Uno with a USB data cable, select Arduino Uno and its port, then open the Lab 1 core sketch. Click Verify, then Upload.

Check: The Lab 1 core sketch uploads successfully and the LED marked L blinks. For serial sketches, match Serial Monitor to the sketch baud rate.

Troubleshooting

No board or port appears

Check the USB connection and try a known data-capable cable and another USB port. Then inspect the board selector and OS device list. A power LED alone does not prove data works.

List COM port names

Arduino IDE does not show a port.

[System.IO.Ports.SerialPort]::GetPortNames()

One or more COM names, such as COM3; no output means none were returned.

No output can mean a charge-only cable, disconnected board, driver problem, or a device that has not enumerated. It does not diagnose which one.

Inspect Windows port devices

A board is powered but no COM port is apparent.

Get-PnpDevice -Class Ports | Select-Object FriendlyName, Status, InstanceId

Rows with a friendly name, status, and instance ID when Ports-class devices exist.

No rows or an error can mean no Ports-class devices, an unavailable PnpDevice cmdlet, or device/driver issues; compare before and after plugging in the board.

Verify succeeds but Upload fails

Check board and port again; close other applications using the serial port and reconnect the board. If necessary, follow Arduino’s upload diagnostics.

List COM port names

[System.IO.Ports.SerialPort]::GetPortNames()

One or more COM names, such as COM3; no output means none were returned.

No output can mean a charge-only cable, disconnected board, driver problem, or a device that has not enumerated. It does not diagnose which one.

Serial Monitor text is unreadable

Select 9600 baud for the Intro Lab serial sketches, matching Serial.begin(9600); close any second program holding the port.

Sketch does not compile

Select Arduino Uno first, read the first error, and verify that the open sketch is the intended complete source file. See Arduino’s compile guidance.

Optional built-in Blink diagnostic

Open File > Examples > 01.Basics > Blink and click Verify. This is a troubleshooting check; the normal first upload is the Lab 1 core sketch.
